Master Categories contain Categories, which is the second level of how RentalDesk sorts and manages your rental inventory. Using the examples above, some examples of categories would be:

Categories contain Types. Types are typically a more precise description of the equipment to be rented and usually contain the manufacturers name and the model number. Types of equipment have a quantity owned associated with the type of equipment. Examples of types would be:

Types can contain Barcodes. Barcodes are specific units that usually have a serial number on the unit. A barcode label is usually attached to a specific item, and RentalDesk then tracks the unit with its barcode. Not every type of equipment will have a barcode associated with it, so there is no need to be concerned if you have not set up any barcodes when you first get started. For instance, an extension cable may not have a barcode attached to it. Barcodes are used so you can tell the exact unit that the customer rented from you in addition to knowing how many units the customer rented from you.
